Insights

Illuminating ESG Perspectives and Implementation

Global adoption of ESG practices among investors has achieved a new peak, with this year's study indicating a slight increase to 90%. While this rise is more modest compared to the previous report's five-percentage-point increase, it reflects the widespread adoption of ESG, and barriers are diminishing. Although data quality, regulatory complexity, and fund disclosures continue to be highlighted as challenges, the perceived difficulty in these areas has lessened. Investors are becoming more proactive and empowered, addressing challenges like confusion around fund labeling and data difficulties through their own initiatives.

Our research reveals a substantial number of investors are successfully navigating various ESG challenges. Particularly in the regulatory domain, they are formulating their own ESG definitions and categorizations to address the confusion and complexity associated with fund labeling. Progress is evident in the data sphere, too, as investors aim to overcome inconsistencies by tapping into multiple sources. Many investors are effectively dismantling longstanding ESG barriers through a pragmatic and flexible approach that leverages their resources and utilizes the expertise of asset managers. Notably, they strongly prefer active managers, seeking effective engagement, alpha generation, and opportunities to invest in transitioners, along with a diverse array of ESG themes that promise compelling financial and non-financial rewards.
